Focusing on China's major strategic needs of “marine energy exploitation” and “energy-saving and carbon reduction” and the forefront of international science, the Key Laboratory of Ocean Energy Utilization and Energy Conservation of the Ministry of Education conducts systematic and innovative research on fundamental theories, key technologies and engineering application of exploitation of marine energy and resources, carbon reduction and clean energy use, efficient clean energy system to address such Engineering Thermophysics issues as energy development, conversion, regulation, and emission reduction and other interdisciplinary issues. Results of the Laboratory are applied in major projects including natural gas hydrate production test in the South China Sea, CNPC whole-process carbon dioxide (CO2) miscible flooding, and clean energy accommodation and power regulation of the South-to-North Water Diversion. The Laboratory, cultivating more than 20 winners of national talents of all types, has won five national awards including National Natural Science Awards, National S&T Progress Awards, and National Technology Invention Awards, and over 20 ministerial and provincial-level awards. It has turned into an internationally renowned base for scientific research and talent training on marine energy utilization, energy conservation and emission reduction with distinctive features, providing theoretical, technical, application and talent support for China to become a strong maritime country and achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.
