Located in the northeast China, the Laboratory aims at China’s needs to improve ecological civilization and revitalize old industrial bases in northeast China as well as international frontiers to address several crucial scientific issues in domestic industrial environmental protection. Featuring prevention and control of heavy chemical industry pollution, the Laboratory puts equal emphasis on basic research and its application, and focuses on scientific research and technological innovation of the following three directions: (1) industrial pollution control technologies and theories; (2) industrial waste secondary resource utilization; (3) industrial ecological system principle and planning guidelines for the development of eco-industrial parks. It has made innovative achievements at high theoretical level and broad application prospects, making the Laboratory a research platform with global significance in industrial pollution prevention and control, which can provide theoretical, technical and talent support for the old industrial bases in Northeast China and other domestic industrial areas to adopt a new approach to industrialization.
The Laboratory relies on the national key discipline of Environmental Engineering, the doctoral program in the first-level discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering, and the post-doctoral mobile center. Its discipline of Environment scored A- in the assessment of the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2016, and the total citations of published papers about "Environment / Ecology" ranked among the top 1% in ESI. The Laboratory has a winner of the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars, a professor winning the title of the "Young and Middle-Aged Leading Talents in Scientific and Technological Innovation" (YMLTSCI) of the Ministry of Science (MS), and a high-level academic team consisting of nine "Trans-Century and the New Century Talents" of the Ministry of Education. The Laboratory personnel have held important positions in a number of domestic organizations, including members of the environmental discipline group of the 6th and 7th discipline consultative group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and vice chairman of the Water Environment Branch of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, etc. A total of 18 members of the Laboratory serve as editorial board members of nearly 40 international and domestic academic journals like Chem. Eng. J., etc.
The Laboratory personnel presided over the formulation of a number of local environmental standards, the conduction of cleaner production audits, source analysis of air pollutants in industrial parks, life cycle assessment of the goal of industrial symbiosis in chemical industrial parks, etc., providing strong support for the realization of regional and local environmental management goals. The research and development of key technologies such as electron donor (Fe) enhanced anaerobic biochemical wastewater treatment technology, the preparation of functional suspended fillers and upgrading and transformation technology of wastewater treatment, vertical tubulant combination and integration process, the poly-generation technology including cleaning, pyrolysis, and gasification in the treatment of organic wastes have benefited the whole country, which has solved a number of technical problems in environmental pollution control of China’s heavy chemical industry. The Laboratory has developed into a crucial research platform for the prevention and control of industrial pollution in China.
